Kit Carson began making knives in 1972, the same year he was drafted into the Army. He grew up in Georgia, interested in mechanical things right from the start. Kit retired from the Army in 1993 as a master sergeant. He was known for his willingness to teach anyone and everyone how to make knives. Kit Carson was instrumental in popularizing the flipper style of folding knife. He made a wide range of tactical and utility folders, some of which are now reproduces by Columbia River Knife & Tool.
